Ray Sherwood began homebrewing about 20 years ago and what started as a hobby quickly became a passion that would alter his career path after college graduation. He began as a bartender at Michigan Brewing Company and paid close attention on brew days to learn more about the commercial brewing process. In 2003, he spent the better part of a year shadowing brewer Scott Isham at Harper’s Brewpub in East Lansing. One of the busiest brewpubs in the state, he learned quickly about the ins and outs of commercial brewing and knew this was his calling. With a move back to the metro Detroit area came a new position managing Brewing World, the retail store owned by Kuhnhenn brothers Brett and Eric. Assisting with brewing and helping customers learn to homebrew were the catalysts that started Ray’s adventure into owning his own brewery.
Lisa Sherwood has a long history of education and employment in the field of youth development and family services. Although she didn’t have much experience with brewing or the restaurant industry, she quickly found her way into the world of marketing, human resources, accounting, and everything else that came with running a successful business! Staying true to her roots, however, Lisa has kept the brewery strongly connected to the community through various types of outreach. Whether it’s fundraising for a local cause, networking to support local businesses, or donating to school and community events, Sherwood Brewing Company is instrumental in helping others.
